A dispossessed purveyor of gastronomic conveyance has conceded culpability in a conspiracy to defraud DoorDash of a sum exceeding $2.5 million, achieved through the orchestration of phantom deliveries, as asserted by federal legal representatives.
Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri entered a guilty plea Tuesday in San Jose's federal court to a solitary charge of conspiracy to perpetrate wire fraud, as divulged by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Devagiri, 30, a Newport Beach, California resident, has confessed to conspiring with three accomplices throughout 2020 and 2021 in a scheme to defraud a San Francisco-domiciled delivery enterprise, according to pronouncements from federal prosecutorial authorities.
Prosecutors alleged that Devagiri exploited customer accounts to orchestrate high-value orders, subsequently leveraging an employee's credentials to surreptitiously access DoorDash's proprietary software, enabling the manual reassignment of said orders to collusive driver accounts under his and his associates' control; Devagiri then purportedly engineered the fraudulent driver accounts to falsely report completed deliveries, thereby manipulating DoorDash's computer systems into disbursing payments for these phantom deliveries, according to official statements.
Devagiri, leveraging DoorDash's proprietary software, would surreptitiously manipulate order statuses, reverting "delivered" designations to "in process" and subsequently re-allocating these orders to driver accounts under his and his co-conspirators' control, thereby initiating a fraudulent cycle, according to the prosecution's case.
In a denouement to the protracted malfeasance, the erstwhile employee, having been implicated in the aforementioned artifice, entered a plea of *nolo contendere* to charges of conspiracy to effectuate wire fraud in November of 2023, thereby tacitly acknowledging culpability in the orchestration of the illicit scheme, according to statements issued by the prosecuting authorities.
Devagiri, the third defendant thus far adjudged culpable in this sprawling conspiracy, now confronts a potential custodial sentence of up to two decades, coupled with a pecuniary penalty not exceeding $250,000, and is slated to reappear before the court on September 16th.
