A one-time purveyor of victuals, conveyed hither and yon via internal combustion engine, has entered a plea of culpability concerning a conspiracy levied against him; the crux of the indictment alleges said individual colluded with accomplices to defraud DoorDash of a sum exceeding $2.5 million, achieved by means of fabricating an elaborate charade of phantom deliveries, thereby illicitly inducing the aforementioned entity to disburse funds for services never rendered, according to pronouncements emanating from federal prosecutorial bodies.
Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri entered a guilty plea on Tuesday in the San Jose federal jurisdiction, admitting to a solitary count of conspiracy to perpetrate wire fraud, as confirmed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Devagiri, 30, a Newport Beach, California resident, has conceded to participating in a conspiracy with three confederates throughout 2020 and 2021 to perpetrate a fraud against a San Francisco-domiciled delivery enterprise, according to pronouncements issued by federal prosecuting attorneys.
Prosecutors alleged that Devagiri exploited customer accounts to initiate high-value orders, subsequently leveraging an employee's credentials to illicitly penetrate DoorDash's proprietary software, enabling the clandestine reassignment of said orders to driver accounts under his and his accomplices' dominion; Devagiri then orchestrated the fraudulent reporting of phantom deliveries by these compromised accounts and manipulated DoorDash's computational infrastructure to disburse payments for these non-existent deliveries to the implicated fraudulent entities, as affirmed by official sources.
Devagiri would then exploit DoorDash's proprietary software, programmatically altering order statuses from "delivered" to "in process," subsequently reallocating these orders, via manual assignment, to a network of driver accounts under his and his accomplices' control, thereby perpetuating the fraudulent scheme, according to prosecutorial findings.
The disgraced erstwhile employee, embroiled in the fraudulent scheme, entered a guilty plea to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud in November 2023, furthermore conceding his instrumental involvement in the orchestration of the illicit enterprise, according to statements issued by the prosecuting counsel.
Devagiri, the third defendant to be adjudged culpable in this intricate conspiracy, now confronts a potential penal servitude of two decades and a pecuniary sanction of $250,000, with his next curial appearance slated for September 16th.
