On Monday morning, the owner of the Athletics team, John Fisher, stood in front of many people. Behind him, there was a lot of dirt, construction vehicles, and the place where home plate will be at the new baseball field. He said, "We are Vegas' team."
Many people watched as the team started building a new baseball park. This park will cost a lot of money and can hold 33,000 people. It should be ready for the 2028 season. Important people like the head of MLB, local government officials, and famous former players were there, along with young baseball players.
Nevada and Clark County will give up to $380 million of public money for the project.
Team president Marc Badain said, "I am sure this will be done in 2028. The workers here are ready to start."
It's good to see that today proves this is a good idea. The next three years will bring many good things for the people here, like the building project and new jobs. You will see all these things as the building starts to be built, maybe even tonight.
Badain did a similar job when he worked for the Raiders football team. He was important when the team moved from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020. He also helped get approval for and build the Allegiant Stadium, which cost $2 billion.
Before their new stadium was ready, the Raiders stayed in Oakland for three years and played in the same stadium as the A's. The Raiders still felt close to their fans in Oakland. But A's fans were very angry because their team was going to leave.
The team could not stay in Oakland, so they played their last season in the old stadium last year. Now, they are playing about an hour away in West Sacramento for at least three years, because they are waiting to move to Las Vegas.
Fisher said, "We are a local team. We want to get young fans first. If we have the children, we will also get their parents. It does not take much time. What takes a lot of time is to become a team that wins."
"We want to keep improving what we have already, and making a team is like making anything. It can take a long time. It's like building a stadium. We believe we have what we need to be successful."
The stadium will be built on some of the land that Bally's owns. This land is 35 acres and is at Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. The old Tropicana hotel was taken down in October to make space for the new stadium.
The A's want to do well where they are playing now and also get ready for their future. Each player has a picture of Sacramento's Tower Bridge on one arm and a Las Vegas logo on the other. This is because of a three-year deal with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
In December, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority said yes to some important papers. This means the A's team will probably move to Las Vegas soon.
The stadium looks like the Sydney Opera House. It has five parts that are on top of each other. There is a big glass window behind the playing field. From there, you can see the Las Vegas Strip and feel like you are outside. The air conditioning will come from under the seats, not from one central system.
This stadium will be the smallest in MLB. The Tampa Bay Rays usually play at Tropicana Field. It can hold 25,000 people if the top seats are closed. If not, it can hold almost 40,000 people.
The Rays are playing in a different stadium this year because a hurricane damaged their usual one, just like the A's. We don't know where the Rays will play in the future, and new owners might buy the team soon.
Cleveland plays at Progressive Field. Now, 34,830 people can sit there. When the park opened in 1994, it could hold 43,345 people, so they made it smaller.
The A's will be the fourth big sports team in Las Vegas. The Raiders, Golden Knights, and Aces are already there.
Manfred said, "I think this is a good place for our team. This is because of the people who live here, how well other sports have done, and the many tourists. I am sure this team will do very well in Las Vegas."
