The Formula 1 team Alpine has elected to modify its driver roster, elevating Franco Colapinto for a tenure spanning a minimum of the forthcoming quintet of Grands Prix, thereby superseding Jack Doohan.
Alpine confirmed the vicissitude on Wednesday, a day following Oliver Oakes's abrupt departure as team principal, stipulating that Flavio Briatore would retain his position as executive advisor and concurrently discharge Oakes's former responsibilities.
In a formal communiqué, Alpine disclosed that Colapinto is slated for association with Pierre Gasly commencing at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, a provisional arrangement preceding a subsequent assessment prior to the British Grand Prix in July.
Alpine currently languishes in a rather ignominious ninth position within the Formula 1 constructors' championship, having navigated the initial sextet of races; the subsequent race weekend is definitively scheduled for May 16th through 18th at Imola.
In the crucible of Sunday's Miami Grand Prix, Doohan's nascent challenge was abruptly curtailed, first by an entanglement on the inaugural lap, and then definitively extinguished by a subsequent, more calamitous impact on the second.
Ahead of the Miami Grand Prix weekend, Oakes repudiated media speculation regarding a driver rotation, having previously intimated that the neophyte Australian pilot would retain his berth.
Doohan, whose ephemeral foray into seven Grand Prix races yielded no points and culminated in a peak performance of merely 13th place, is slated to resume his station as the team's ancillary driver.
The progeny of five-time motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan, Jack Doohan, effected his Formula 1 ingress at the denouement of the 2024 season, commencing the current campaign for Alpine at the inaugural Australian Grand Prix, having superseded Esteban Ocon following the latter's lackluster 2024 sortie and consequent departure from the outfit.
Colapinto acceded to the position of reserve driver for Alpine in January, having previously contended in 2024 for Williams, where he accrued five points following his August substitution for Logan Sargeant.
