He was a singer and songwriter.
He won Tony and Grammy awards.

The post called him a rare talent.
It said he had a big influence on music and theater.
Sheik was famous for his radio hit "Barely Breathing."
Later he worked on Broadway with "Spring Awakening."
The show was about teenage problems.
It started in 2006 and ran for over 860 shows.
It won eight Tony Awards, including best musical.
It also won a Grammy for best musical show album.
The musical came from a 19th-century play by Frank Wedekind.
Steven Sater wrote the lyrics.
Sheik also wrote musicals based on "American Psycho" and "Alice in Wonderland."
"Barely Breathing" was on the Billboard Hot 100 for 55 weeks.
It reached No. 16.
In 2015, he told the Los Angeles Times about his goal.
He wanted theater to listen to what the rest of the world listens to.
The first cast of "Spring Awakening" included Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and John Gallagher Jr.
They later became famous in TV, film and stage.
A new off-Broadway version will open this fall.
His musical "Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen" will open too.
Sheik is survived by his parents, his wife Nora Ariffin, and a daughter, Ines.
