Stocks went up earlier.
Brent crude briefly fell below $98 a barrel.
Then oil cut those losses.
Brent was at $100.23.
That is down from nearly $110 last week.
But it is still much higher than $72.
That was the price before the war with Iran began.
Prices moved a lot.
People are not sure when oil can flow freely again from the Middle East.
AutoZone rose 6%.
It beat profit forecasts.
But its revenue was too low.
CEO Phil Daniele spoke.
He said the auto parts seller had a hard market early in the quarter.
But later, things got better.
Thor Industries stock rose 3.7%.
Its profit was stronger.
CEO Bob Martin spoke.
He said fuel is expensive.
Interest rates are high.
Inflation is high too.
These things stretch customers' budgets.
Strong profit reports have pushed U.S. stocks near record highs.
This is true even with high oil prices.
People also worry about AI stocks.
Analysts expect S&P 500 companies to report nearly 29% growth.
This is for the third quarter, according to FactSet.
On Holding jumped 10.7%.
It set financial goals.
It also approved up to $1 billion in buybacks through 2029.
Oil and gas stocks fell with crude prices.
Banks dropped too.
The Federal Reserve raised short-term rates last week.
The 10-year Treasury yield edged up to 4.97%.
