Canada put tariffs on about $20 billion of U.S. goods on Tuesday.
This is an answer to new U.S. tariffs.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said U.S. demands could hurt key Canadian industries.
He said they could also limit Canada's freedom.
The world is watching this fight.
It is a test.
Can a smaller U.S. friend stand against President Donald Trump's economic pressure?
The Canadian tariffs cover many American products.
These include steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics, and farm equipment.
The rates are 15%, 25%, or 50%.
Canada says its tariffs match Washington's tariffs.
They match dollar for dollar and rate for rate.
The tariffs cover about 6% of U.S. goods sold to Canada last year.
That amount was $333.6 billion.
Trump has said he may do more.
He may stop Bombardier plane sales.
This will happen unless the company builds planes in the U.S.
He also warned about 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts, and steel next year.
Canadian officials say this could hurt factories.
It could also raise vehicle prices in North America.
Parts cross the border many times during production.
Trump's pressure has not worked in Canada.
It has made people support Carney more.
Canadians have stopped many trips to the U.S.
They also do not buy American goods.
Experts say the relationship will not go back to how it was before Trump.
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said, "I'm convinced that we will be able to show the world that Canada will win this trade war."
