U.S. stocks fell Tuesday after the three-day weekend.
The S&P 500 went down 0.6%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 628 points, or 1.2%.
The Nasdaq composite went down 0.3%.
Higher oil prices caused the losses.
Brent crude oil briefly hit $99.46 a barrel.
Then it settled at $97.92, up 0.9%.
Prices have gone up from about $72 in early July.
This is because fighting in the Middle East is stopping oil supply.
More expensive oil makes people worry about high inflation.
Two inflation reports come this week.
Thursday's report is about wholesale prices.
It is expected to show a rise to 5.4% from 4.7% in July.
Friday's report is about consumer prices.
It is expected to slow to 3.3% from July's 3.4%.
Both are still above the Federal Reserve's 2% goal.
These are the last reports before the Fed meets next week about interest rates.
President Donald Trump has pushed for lower rates.
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh wants to give markets fewer hints about short-term plans.
Traders see almost a 60% chance the Fed will raise rates on Sept. 16.
The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.79%.
That is near its highest level since autumn 2023.
Boston Scientific fell 5.9%.
A cybersecurity problem hurt its sales outlook.
Novartis shares fell 13.9%.
A therapy study update was discouraging.
Qualcomm rose 3.2%.
It announced an AI data center deal with Amazon.
Japan's Nikkei 225 sank 1.7%.
The yen became stronger.
Chinese indexes were mixed.
Exports jumped 25% in August.
