Canada put tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. goods on Tuesday.
This was its answer to the latest U.S. tariffs.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said U.S. demands could hurt key Canadian industries.
He also said they could limit Canada’s independence.
People around the world are watching this fight.
They want to see if a smaller U.S. ally can stand against President Donald Trump’s economic pressure.
The Canadian tariffs cover hundreds of American products.
These include steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics and farm equipment.
The rates are 15%, 25% or 50%.
Canada says its measures match Washington’s tariffs.
They are the same dollar for dollar and rate for rate.
The tariffs cover about 6% of the $333.6 billion that the United States sent to Canada last year.
Trump has threatened to do more.
He may ban sales of Bombardier aircraft.
This would happen unless the company builds planes in the U.S.
He also warned about 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel next year.
Canadian officials say this could hurt factories.
It could also raise vehicle prices across North America.
That is because parts cross the border many times during production.
Trump’s pressure has had the opposite effect in Canada.
It has made people support Carney more.
Canadians have stopped traveling to the U.S.
They have also stopped buying American goods.
Experts say the relationship will not return to how it was before Trump.
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said, “I’m convinced that we will be able to show the world that Canada will win this trade war.”
