U.S. employers posted a few more job openings in July.
The number went up to 7.27 million.
In June, it was 7.18 million.
The Labor Department reported this on Tuesday.
Fewer people lost their jobs.
But fewer people quit their jobs, too.
New hiring went down to 5.1 million in July.
In June, it was 5.3 million.
The job market is not growing fast.
But it is staying steady.
This is true even with high energy prices.
The fight with Iran has made energy cost more.
That has squeezed family budgets.
This year, employers added about 61,000 jobs each month.
That number is not great.
But it is better than 2025.
In 2025, monthly job growth was below 10,000.
The unemployment rate stays low at 4.1%.
Fewer people are asking for jobless benefits.
Heather Long is the chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union.
She said the market is in a "low fire, low hire" mode.
That means companies are not hiring much.
She said companies are careful.
They worry about the war in Iran.
They also worry about higher borrowing costs.
Friday's report will show job numbers for August.
Experts think it will show 65,000 new jobs.
FactSet asked forecasters about this.
They also think the jobless rate will go up to 4.2%.
