Canada is making its defense industry stronger.
This is happening as its relationship with the United States gets worse.
You can see this change inside a factory in Toronto.
There, workers sew covers for helmets.
These helmets are for the Canadian military.
The factory belongs to Wuxly.
Wuxly usually makes expensive winter coats.
Now it is starting to work for the military.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has promised to make Canada more independent.
The United States has put new taxes on goods from Canada.
So Canada wants to depend less on other countries.
His defense plan adds $60 billion over five years.
The plan wants to use fewer American suppliers.
It also wants to build supply lines inside Canada.
This plan could create 125,000 jobs.
It could also make the defense industry three times bigger in ten years.
Canadian companies are making drones, robots, and sensors for the Arctic.
Wuxly has sent 40,000 uniforms for women to Ukraine's military.
New Frontier Robotics is making a robot arm.
The arm uses AI.
It can be used by the military and by civilians.
Volatus Aerospace makes drones.
These drones can drop supplies or weapons from the air.
Canada has also bought radar planes from a Swedish company called Saab.
It has bought submarines from a German company called ThyssenKrupp.
Experts say there will be problems.
Big American companies will compete with Canadian ones.
There are also political risks.
But James Yurichuk is the founder of Wuxly.
He said defense shows are sold out.
He said new companies are joining the defense business.
