Chinese officials said on Friday that Tesla and some Chinese carmakers are recalling more than 4 million cars.
Most of the cars have problems with door handles.
Tesla is recalling about 2.98 million electric cars.
These cars were made in China or brought into China.
They include Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S.
Chinese media say this is the biggest recall this year.
The regulator said that in very bad situations, like a big crash that stops the power, the handles could stop people from opening the doors.
People could not get out, and rescuers could not get in.
Tesla will update the software to make the cars safer, the notice said.
Xiaomi is recalling more than 390,000 cars.
Leapmotor is recalling over 370,000 cars.
Geely and XPENG are also recalling some cars.
The reasons were the same.
Most of the problems were with door handles.
In February, China said it will stop hidden door handles starting next year.
These handles are common on Tesla and many Chinese electric cars.
The official People's Daily newspaper said the big recall is a safety upgrade before the 2027 ban.
It also said that competition in the new energy car industry should be about safety, not just new ideas.
