The United States will put 25% tariffs on some Brazilian goods. This starts on July 22. The move comes after a one-year study. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative did the study. It found unfair trade actions by Brazil. These include weak rules against corruption. Brazil also has its own unfair tariffs.

Some goods are free from the tariffs. These are coffee, beef, oranges, orange juice, some energy products, and aerospace parts. Officials said these items are not made in the U.S. Or their free status stops supply problems.

The U.S. Trade Representative is Jamieson Greer. He said the action makes a fair field for American workers and companies. He added that talks with Brazil over the past year did not fix the problems. The U.S. has had a goods trade surplus with Brazil for years.

The Brazilian president is Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He reacted with anger. He blamed his political rival, Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro. The Secretary of State is Marco Rubio. He said Lula did not talk in good faith. The tariffs come under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
