Consumer confidence in the US got much better in May, as reported by the Conference Board, after five months of going down. The index went up by 12.3 points to 98, from 85.7 in April, which was the lowest it had been since the pandemic started. This improvement seems mostly because people are less worried about how the previous government's tariffs will affect the economy. However, what people expect for their income, business, and jobs in the near future stayed below 80, which might mean a recession is coming. The Labor Department said that 177,000 jobs were added in April, which helped make people more confident. But, worries about tariffs and rising prices still had a big impact on what people said in the survey. Even with these worries, people still planned to spend more on houses, cars, and holidays.
