European Union officials are working to prevent a 50% tax on imported goods that the Trump administration might impose. The U.S. President has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with Europe selling more goods to the U.S. than it buys, leading to a trade deficit. The EU, however, argues that when digital services are included, the U.S. actually sells more than it purchases, thus balancing the trade. To adjust the trade in goods, the EU could increase its purchases of liquefied natural gas from the U.S., boost defense spending with U.S. contractors, or reduce its 10% tax on foreign cars. Nevertheless, difficulties have arisen in resolving concerns regarding European regulations on food and agricultural products, as well as the value-added taxes utilized by European governments. Economists predict that if implemented, the 50% tariffs would diminish the collective economy of the eurozone countries by up to 1% next year and decrease business investment by over 6%.
