A new law in Peru about trees and animals is making some groups angry. They say it can make more trees in the Amazon forest disappear. They say it is for money, but it is bad for the forest.

Now, people don't need to ask the government to change their land. Some people are afraid because they think people will cut down trees in a bad way.

"For us, this is a big problem," said Alvaro Masquez Salvador. He works for Indigenous people in Peru.

He said the new law is not good. It gives land to some people. But the land is for everyone.

People who like the new law say it helps farming in Peru and gives farmers more help with rules.

AP asked many people in farming and politician Maria Zeta Chunga about the law. One person in farming said nothing.

Peru has a lot of Amazon rainforest, the second most after Brazil. It has over 70 million hectares, which is about 60% of Peru's land. This area has many different plants and animals. Many Indigenous people live here, some live alone. These people are important for the forests. The forests help the world by taking in bad air that makes the Earth warmer.

A law in 2011 said you need permission to cut down trees. New laws make it easier to cut trees. Now, people can cut trees and not ask first.

A court in Peru said yes to a law about land. Some people did not like it. The court said no to some parts, but yes to a part about old land changes. Some people think this part is bad.

The court said they should have talked to the local people about changing the law. It also said the Environment Ministry decides where forests are.

A lawyer said: "The court said the law was bad for the people. They should have been asked. But the court still likes the bad part."

This change is like what happened in Brazil. People there wanted to change rules to help farms, not nature. In Brazil, big companies wanted this. In Peru, different people want this, but they work together.

In Peru, bad people like big farmers and land thieves give help. Also people who do bad things like digging for gold illegally or selling drugs. Small farmers who worry about their land also join.

Vladimir Pinto said that good and bad groups are working together.

Julia from Peru says the government is not telling the truth. They say new rules are needed for Europe. Europe wants companies to show that their products like soy and meat do not come from forests that were cut down illegally.

She said if wood from cutting trees illegally can be sold, rules in places like Europe will not work well.

This is not good for business around the world and makes it harder to stop cutting down trees, Urrunaga said.

Mr. Olivier Coupleux said new laws in Peru are not about the EU's rules on wood.

Coupleux said the new rule is to stop buying things that hurt forests. It needs to check where things like coffee and wood come from to be sure they are good for the Earth.

Groups cannot use courts in their country. So, they will go to courts in other countries. They say the decision is not good. It might let other countries not follow rules about nature.

Many leaders of native people think this law is bad for their land, people, and lives.

Julio Cusurichi said the plan is bad for the forest and make things worse.

"Our people have always kept our lands and the world safe," Cusurichi said.
