Officials reported on Thursday that more than 500 individuals are presumed to have perished following accounts of two vessels transporting members of Myanmar’s persecuted Rohingya minority having capsized in the Bay of Bengal.
According to preliminary information, the two vessels departed Myanmar’s western state of Rakhine in late June, predominantly carrying Rohingya passengers—including some who had journeyed from refugee camps across the border in Bangladesh—as per a joint statement issued by the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
One vessel, believed to have been conveying approximately 250 individuals, abruptly ceased all communications subsequent to its departure.
A second craft, reportedly transporting 280 persons, is presumed to have foundered off the coast of Myanmar's Ayeyarwady region on July 8.
The agencies articulated that, “While the incidents and casualty figures have yet to be officially confirmed, UNHCR and IOM are gravely concerned by the potentially devastating loss of life.”
The Rohingya, who in recent years have fled both Myanmar and Bangladesh’s squalid refugee camps by the thousands, typically eschew such maritime voyages at this juncture of the year, when monsoons are prevalent and sea conditions are particularly perilous.
The UNHCR and IOM noted this in their statement, asserting that the recent torrential rainfall and inundation across the region would have rendered such journeys especially hazardous.
Approximately 1.2 million stateless Rohingya, predominantly Muslim, remain confined within severely overcrowded refugee camps in Bangladesh, having fled successive waves of violence perpetrated by Myanmar’s security forces.
The refugees are precluded from any viable means of safely repatriating to Myanmar, where the junta responsible for the slaughter of thousands of Rohingya in 2017—an atrocity the United States formally designated as genocide—continues to exercise dominion over their homeland.
Those Rohingya still residing in Myanmar endure draconian restrictions, with a substantial number confined to internment camps.
The drastic curtailment of foreign aid by the United States and other donor nations has precipitated ration reductions within Bangladesh’s refugee camps, whilst the ruling military junta and an ethnic armed group in Rakhine State are locked in a struggle for territorial dominance.
The escalating unrest has precipitated a surge in the number of Rohingya undertaking the perilous maritime passage to Malaysia aboard dilapidated vessels.
Countless individuals, including infants, children, and pregnant women, have perished in the process.
Local maritime authorities have frequently abandoned the Rohingya at sea, often disregarding reports of vessels in distress.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) declared on Thursday that the most recent potential maritime catastrophe underscores the persistent absence of sustainable resolutions for the Rohingya, and implored the international community to extend assistance to those confined within Bangladesh’s camps.
The agencies asserted that more robust regional and international interventions are imperative to avert further fatalities along one of the world's most perilous maritime routes, necessitating enhanced search and rescue operations, expanded access to asylum and protective mechanisms, and concerted action against smuggling and trafficking syndicates.
In 2025, over 6,500 Rohingya fled by sea, with nearly 900 reported dead or missing, rendering it the deadliest year on record for those attempting to escape by boat; the UNHCR noted that this figure constitutes the highest mortality rate of any major maritime route for refugees and migrants globally.
