In a military cemetery in Kyiv, there are many crosses.

They mark the graves of unknown Ukrainian soldiers.

Each cross says "unknown defender of Ukraine" and has an ID number.

One grave now has a photo on it.

The photo shows Ihor Yalynych.

He was a soldier missing since 2022.

His children, Stanislav and Oleksandra, found him after four years of searching.

Ihor Yalynych died in April 2022 in eastern Ukraine.

His body stayed in enemy land until September 2022.

The family had problems with paperwork.

A police file was lost.

This stopped DNA testing for over two years.

Stanislav gave a DNA sample six months ago.

A match came two months later.

Ukraine buries unknown soldiers because cold storage was full.

This happened before the national cemetery was finished.

More than 300 unknown soldiers now lie there.

Veterans Affairs Minister Natalia Kalmykova said the state keeps the flag of each unknown soldier.

They keep it until the soldier is found.

Three soldiers buried as unknown have now been found.

Finding soldiers is slow because many did not give DNA samples early in the war.

About half of Ukraine's soldiers have now given samples.

Over 40,000 samples from unknown bodies are registered.

Most have been matched with family samples.

Forensic experts say the work will continue long after the war ends.
