In a retaliatory response before dawn, Iran launched a coordinated salvo of missiles and drones targeting Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait.

A protracted series of reciprocal strikes between the United States and Iran across the Middle East, compounded by renewed threats to the Strait of Hormuz, has effectively dismantled the interim agreement intended to conclude the Iran conflict and now risks precipitating the region into full-scale warfare.

Iranian authorities have already reported that American strikes have resulted in over 35 fatalities and more than 300 casualties.

Furthermore, for the first time in this current cycle of hostilities, strikes have extended into the vicinity of Tehran, Iran's capital.

Upon the commencement of hostilities between the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, Tehran effectively shuttered the strait to maritime traffic, a stratagem that precipitated a dramatic escalation in the prices of petroleum, fertilisers, and a plethora of other commodities, reverberating far beyond the immediate region and conferring upon Iran substantial leverage in subsequent negotiations.

Ali Akbar Velayati, an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, intimated that the nation’s theocracy would persist in its contestation over the strait, characterizing Tehran’s command of the waterway on Thursday as “a very precious achievement.”

The escalating price levels present a particularly formidable challenge to U.S. President Donald Trump and his Republican Party, which aspires to retain its congressional majority in the November elections.

However, Washington has encountered considerable difficulty in its efforts to successfully reopen the waterway, culminating in Trump's reimposition of the naval blockade on Wednesday.

Iran’s parliamentary speaker and chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, asserted that the Islamic Republic is prepared to engage in a more extensive military confrontation should the United States fail to adhere to the stipulations of the interim agreement, while Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard has threatened to cease all energy exports from the Middle East in response to the blockade.

"The export of oil and gas from the region shall be either for all or for none," the Guard declared.

Trump reiterated his assertion that Iran was on the verge of concluding a peace accord, yet he abstained from furnishing any supplementary elucidation.

He expressed an unequivocal aversion to our current course of action, coupled with a definitive desire to reach a settlement; the outcome will determine whether we negotiate a resolution with them or proceed to a conclusive termination of the matter, he stated on Wednesday at the U.S. Army War College in Pennsylvania.

In a separate statement disseminated via social media, Trump asserted that Tehran had extended a gesture of goodwill by releasing an American citizen who had been wrongfully detained in Iran since 2024, though he declined to elaborate further.

Subsequently, human rights attorney Jared Genser issued a statement identifying the individual in question as his client, Dena Karari, a dual U.S.-Iranian national who directs a nonprofit organization and had been accused of espionage.

Iran offered no immediate acknowledgment of the release, and her case had not entered the public domain—a circumstance not uncommon in detentions within the Islamic Republic.

According to state media, the U.S. strikes conducted in the early hours of Thursday impacted the vicinity of Tehran.

The same outlet further reported that American attacks targeted Semnan province, which houses Iran’s ballistic missile production facilities and its space program.

Iranian media additionally reported strikes occurring on Thursday morning across the provinces of Hamedan, Hormozgan, Khuzestan, Lorestan, Markazi, and Sistan and Baluchistan.

On Wednesday, the United States recommenced daylight strikes against Iran, underscoring the escalating frequency of its military operations.

Central Command reported that an assault on Greater Tunb Island—a strategically vital outpost in the Strait of Hormuz—targeted Iranian defensive installations and missile sites.

Concurrently, the U.S. military reported having engaged the Curacao-flagged oil tanker Belma as it navigated toward Kharg Island, Iran’s principal crude oil export terminal in the Persian Gulf.

Following the vessel’s failure to heed “multiple warnings,” a U.S. aircraft incapacitated the merchant ship by discharging a missile directly into its smokestack.

According to Iranian state television, a further American strike on Wednesday targeted a barracks belonging to Iran’s 388th Mechanized Infantry Brigade—a unit operating tanks and armoured vehicles—in Sistan and Baluchestan province.

The report indicated that American forces launched no fewer than 13 missiles in the assault, resulting in seven fatalities, which included both conscripts and career soldiers, as well as a number of wounded personnel.

Iran retaliated on Thursday with a barrage of missiles and drones targeting Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait, according to authorities in those nations, which host U.S. military forces.

No immediate confirmation of damage or casualties resulting from the strikes was forthcoming.

In a concurrent development, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi condemned a nocturnal drone assault on the city of Irbil, situated within Iraq’s semi-autonomous northern Kurdish enclave.

The unmanned aerial vehicle, which authorities confirmed had been intercepted, was deployed during his sojourn to the United States, wherein he articulated Iraq’s commitment to disarming non-state militant factions, inclusive of those under Iranian patronage.

In the interim, crude oil prices are escalating; Brent crude, the international benchmark, traded above $85 per barrel on Thursday, representing an increase of over 15% relative to pre-war levels, yet remaining substantially below the peak of nearly $120 reached at the zenith of the conflict.
