In the wake of a courtroom setback regarding access for an Associated Press reporter, the White House unveiled a new media policy on Tuesday, dramatically curbing access for news agencies serving global media to Donald Trump. This move is seen as the latest attempt by the new administration to assert control over the reporting of its activities.
This action bans the Associated Press and many other news outlets that reach billions of readers. It happened after a judge said the White House violated the agency's freedom of speech because they would not rename the Gulf of Mexico.
The White House is introducing a new policy for covering the President in small spaces like the Oval Office and Air Force One. Sources say the White House will give the Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, the final decision on who can ask the President questions.
The day after the White House continued to stop AP journalists from attending a meeting between Presidents Trump and Bukele, going against Judge McFadden's decision, the White House shared a new rule with some journalists.
For many years, the White House Correspondents' Association has managed a pool system for events with limited space, with journalists from wire services like the Associated Press, Reuters, and Bloomberg participating in rotation, supplemented by a single print journalist selected from over 30 news organizations on a rotating basis.
The White House has explained it will now consolidate reporters from three wire services and print media into two slots, with approximately 36 reporters rotating through these two regular spots. Wire services typically report and write news from multiple locations both domestically and internationally.
In the rotational system, the White House said the Trump press secretary has the final power to "keep daily control and choose who is in the pool." The new rule says reporters can join no matter what important opinions news groups have.
In a statement, Lauren Easton of the AP expressed profound disappointment that the White House had chosen to impose restrictions on all news organizations rather than restore the AP's access.
"The news agency represents thousands of news organizations across the nation and the globe," stated Easton, spokesperson for the Associated Press. "Our reporting is utilized by local newspapers and television stations in all 50 states to inform their communities."
The independent White House Correspondents' Association said the government's actions to control who reports on the president show they intend to continue discriminating based on people's views.
Under Leavitt, the White House has expanded access to news outlets friendly to Trump, a shift underscored Tuesday when Leavitt himself spoke at a news conference and, in posing two questions, praised Trump administration policies.
The new rule on Tuesday didn't talk about photographers' access. In a court case about the Associated Press before, their main White House photographer, Evan Vucci, and a reporter, Zeke Miller, said the ban made it hard for the news agency to share news and pictures quickly.
The government said, "No other news group in the US gets the same sure access as the AP has always had. The AP might be used to this special spot, but the Constitution doesn't say it has to last forever."
The government will go to the Court of Appeal on Thursday. They have appealed Judge McFadden's decision and say that it should be stopped until the main parts of the case are decided.
For the past two months, the government had not restricted AP's access to Leavitt's press conferences, but had blocked White House-credentialed AP reporters from accessing events in the East Room, though on Tuesday, one reporter was permitted entry to an event concerning the Navy football team.
