After losing in court, the White House made new rules on Tuesday. These rules make it harder for news people to get close to Donald Trump. This was the latest way the government tried to control the news about what they do.

This action would stop the AP and other news groups from giving news to many people through many news websites. This happened after a judge said the White House had gone against the group's right to speak freely. The White House stopped the group because it did not agree with the group's choice not to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico.

The White House has a new plan for press events in small places like the Oval Office and Air Force One. The person who speaks for the president, Karoline Leavitt, will choose who can ask questions. People who know about the plan said this.

The White House did not respond to requests for comment on Tuesday evening.

Last week, a judge said the White House was wrong to stop AP reporters from covering events. This was because AP did not want to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico. The judge told the White House to treat AP the same as other news groups.

The next day, the White House told some journalists about a new plan. This happened after they did not follow a rule and still stopped AP from going to meetings.

For many years, a group of White House reporters has decided which reporters can attend small events. They always include reporters from AP, Reuters, and Bloomberg. They also choose one reporter from a newspaper, changing which newspaper they pick each time from over 30 different groups.

Now, the White House says the three news agencies will join print reporters for two places. This means about 36 reporters will share two regular places. News agencies usually write stories that are used in many places in the country and the world.

But the White House said the person who talks to the press can still choose which reporters can come in each day.

The AP said they were very sad because the White House did not let them come back. Instead, the White House made new rules for all news agencies.

News agencies work for many thousands of news companies in the U.S. and around the world," said Easton, who speaks for AP. "Local newspapers and TV stations in every state use our news to tell people in their areas what is happening.

Easton said on Tuesday night, "The government is still not respecting the basic American right to speak freely. They are not letting people speak without stopping them or trying to punish them."

A group of reporters said the government wants to choose which reporters can write about the president. They think this means the government might still pick based on what people think.

Eugene Daniels, the head of the group, said the government should not tell the independent media what to say about the government.

With Leavitt, the White House has talked more to news groups that like Trump. We saw this on Tuesday. The first reporter Leavitt spoke to asked two questions and also said good things about Trump's ideas.

On Monday, during a meeting, Trump was not happy with a CNN reporter, Kaitlan Collins. She asked about a man who was sent back to prison in El Salvador. Trump said CNN did not like the country. He compared her difficult questions to an easier question from another reporter.

Even though there were some problems sometimes, Trump talked to the media more than the president before him, Joe Biden. He liked to talk in small rooms, like the Oval Office. This new rule means the media can talk to him more easily.

The new rule on Tuesday didn't say if photographers could come in. Before that, at a court meeting for AP, their main photographer and a writer said the ban made it hard for the news company to quickly send news and photos to people who use them.

The problem started because AP did not use the name the president wanted for the Gulf of Mexico. But AP did say that the president wanted to call it the Gulf of America. McFadden agreed with AP. He said the government cannot punish them for what they say, because they have the right to speak freely.

The White House said that not all reporters can see the president. They choose who can, like for special talks. The president's lawyers said that even after the court's choice, news reporters might not always go to public events.

The government said that no other news group in the US gets the same easy access as the AP did before. They said the AP might be used to being special, but the law does not say they must always have that special position.

The government did not agree with the judge's decision about McFadden. They will go to a higher court on Thursday. They will ask this court to stop the judge's decision for now. They want to wait until they know everything about the case, maybe even after the highest court in the country looks at it.

The government has not stopped the Associated Press (AP) from going to Leavitt's meetings in the last two months. But it has stopped AP reporters from going to events in the East Room. This changed on Tuesday when one reporter was allowed to go to an event with the Navy football team.
