After losing in court about letting The Associated Press report on the president, the White House made a new rule for the media on Tuesday. This rule makes it much harder for news groups that give stories to news companies everywhere to see Donald Trump. This was the latest try by the new government to control how the news talks about them.
This change would stop news groups like the AP from giving news to many readers through many newspapers and websites. This happened after a judge said the White House was wrong to stop the news group because they didn't agree about what to call a place called the Gulf of Mexico.
The White House has a new plan for reporters to ask questions in small places like the Oval Office and Air Force One. The White House spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, will decide who can ask her boss questions. People who have seen the plan said this.
The White House did not answer questions on Tuesday evening.
Last week, a judge said the White House was wrong to stop AP reporters from going to events. This was because the AP did not want to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico. The judge said the government must treat the AP like other news groups.
The White House shared a new plan with some reporters. This happened after they did not follow a judge's order. They also stopped AP from reporting when Trump and El Salvador's President met.
For many years, the group of reporters at the White House has chosen the reporters for small events. They always chose reporters from AP, Reuters, and Bloomberg. One reporter from a newspaper was also allowed, and they changed which person this was from over 30 news groups.
The White House said that three news services will share two places with newspaper reporters. About 36 reporters will take turns using these two places. News services write stories that are used in many places in the country and around the world.
But the White House said Trump's press secretary can still choose which reporters are in the group each day. The new rule also says news groups can be in the group even if the White House does not like what they say.
Lauren Easton from the AP news agency said they were very unhappy. The White House did not give the AP access again. Instead, the White House put limits on all news agencies.
News agencies work for many news companies in the U.S. and around the world, said Easton from AP. Local newspapers and TV stations in every state use our news to tell people in their towns what is happening.
Easton said on Tuesday night that the government is still not respecting the basic American right to speak freely without being stopped or punished by the government.
The group of White House reporters said the government wants to choose which reporters can write about the president. They think this shows the government might continue to choose who can report based on their ideas.
Eugene Daniels, the head of the group, said, "The government should not control the media that writes about the government."
With Leavitt, the White House has let more news groups who like Trump come in. You could see this on Tuesday. A reporter was the first to speak at a meeting with Leavitt. He asked two questions and also said good things about Trump's ideas.
During a meeting on Monday, President Trump became upset when a CNN reporter asked him about a man who had been sent to prison. Trump claimed that CNN disliked the country and stated that the reporter's questions were more difficult than those from another reporter.
Trump talks to the media a lot, more than Joe Biden did. He likes to talk in small rooms, like the Oval Office. So, the new rules about talking to the media are very important.
The new rule on Tuesday did not say how photographers can get in. Before that, a photographer and a writer from AP went to court. They talked about how the ban made it hard for them to quickly give news and pictures to people.
The problem started because AP did not want to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico, even though the president wanted them to. AP said the government cannot punish them for what they say because they have the right to speak freely.
The White House said they can choose which reporters can see the president, like when he talks to someone alone. His lawyers said that even after a judge's choice, the Associated Press might not always be allowed to go to public events with the president.
The government said no other news group in the US gets the same special access as the AP did before. They said the AP might be used to having this special place, but the Constitution does not say it has to stay like that forever.
The government asked a higher court to look at McFadden's decision. They will be in court on Thursday. They will say that the decision should stop for now. They want to wait until the case is completely finished, maybe by the highest court in the U.S.
The government has not stopped the AP news agency from going to meetings with Leavitt in the last two months. But they did stop AP reporters from going to events in the East Room of the White House. This changed on Tuesday when one reporter could go to an event with the Navy football team.
