They did it in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Meta was also a defendant in the case.

Meta filed its own appeal less than a week before.

The case was about a 20-year-old woman.

Her name is KGM or Kaley.

She said she became addicted to social media as a child.

The jury said YouTube and Meta were negligent.

Their negligence was a big reason for her harm.

The jury gave her $3 million in damages.

It also said she should get $3 million more in punitive damages.

Her lead lawyer is Mark Lanier.

He said the legal team thinks the appellate court will keep the decision.

Google spokesperson José Castañeda said YouTube planned to appeal.

He called it a standard motion.

The trial judge is Carolyn B. Kuhl.

She said no to post-trial motions from both companies in early June.

During the trial, YouTube said it is not a social media platform.

Both YouTube and Meta also talked about legal protections.

These are under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

It protects tech companies from liability for third-party content.

Kaley's case was the first of its kind.

The decision could change thousands of similar lawsuits against social media companies.

TikTok and Snapchat parent Snap Inc. were also defendants.

But they settled before the trial started.
