Amazon announced on Wednesday that the technology conglomerate will deploy its nascent satellite internet service, Amazon Leo, in South Africa by 2027, ostensibly positioning itself ahead of Elon Musk’s competing Starlink to secure a foothold in Africa’s most sophisticated economy.
Amazon, the e-commerce behemoth founded by Jeff Bezos, has announced a strategic partnership with South African internet service provider Herotel to roll out a novel service in the nation of 62 million people, thereby securing its inaugural satellite internet agreement on the African continent.
No pecuniary particulars were initially divulged.
Amazon’s announcement follows Musk’s acerbic censure of the government in his country of birth.
The world’s wealthiest individual has asserted that South African regulatory frameworks have precluded him from deploying Starlink there on account of his ethnicity, and has levelled accusations of systemic racism against the administration.
His remarks pertained to South Africa's affirmative action policies, which mandate that foreign enterprises operating within the communications sector cede a minority equity stake in their local subsidiaries to Black or other non-white proprietors as a prerequisite for obtaining a license.
The regulations are designed to redress historical inequities by affording opportunities that were systematically withheld from non-white individuals under the country’s erstwhile apartheid regime, a system predicated on white minority rule.
The South African government has unequivocally endorsed the Amazon agreement, with Communications Minister Solly Malatsi joining representatives from Amazon and Herotel to jointly announce the accord.
Amazon deployed its inaugural constellation of low-Earth-orbit internet satellites last year and now asserts that over 390 of these units are currently operational.
Starlink’s inaugural operational satellites were deployed in 2019, and the constellation now exceeds 10,000 units in orbit.
While the satellite internet service has been launched in approximately two dozen other African nations, Musk has declined to comply with South Africa’s affirmative action regulations.
Amazon announced on Wednesday that its venture in South Africa marks the commencement of its broader expansion strategy across the African continent, wherein it will also collaborate with Vanu Inc., a Lexington, Massachusetts-based enterprise that specialises in mobile internet connectivity within developing nations.
The latent market for satellite-based internet connectivity in Africa—a continent comprising over 1.5 billion inhabitants, a substantial proportion of whom reside in rural or otherwise underserved locales devoid of fixed broadband infrastructure—represents a vast and largely untapped commercial opportunity.
Per the joint announcements from the company and the local operators with which it is collaborating, Amazon Leo—previously denominated Project Kuiper—has already concluded agreements to initiate services across Thailand, Kazakhstan, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Uruguay.
Starlink, however, maintains a commanding lead, asserting that it now operates in more than 160 countries.
