In a bid to augment its search capabilities, TikTok is now embedding place reviews within the comments section of videos, a nascent feature that obviates the necessity for users to initiate a separate search or resort to external platforms like Google when encountering a location of interest within the application.
TikTok users who possess access to this nascent functionality will observe a discrete "Reviews" tab situated contiguously on the right subsequent to their initiation of viewing the video's associated comments.
For instance, encountering a geotagged video showcasing Central Park in New York City permits perusal of users' aggregated star ratings, textual critiques, and any appended photographic contributions pertaining thereto.
Beyond its core functionality, this interface affords the user the facility to navigate directly to a reviewer's TikTok profile by clicking their username, a distinction setting it apart from a prior Google Maps integration, which was merely signposted with a corresponding icon.
While the new feature may well prove a felicitous adjunct for certain users, others may perceive it as encumbering the user interface during content perusal.
This manoeuvre represents the latest in a series of strategic initiatives by TikTok, aimed at augmenting its search capabilities and posing a formidable challenge to Google's dominance in the domain.
In 2022, a Google executive posited that TikTok was encroaching upon its core services, namely Search and Maps, especially among younger demographics; presently, TikTok has contested Google's hegemony across multiple domains.
Beyond its ascendancy as a premier destination for place inquiries among the Gen Z demographic, TikTok incorporated image recognition functionalities last year, enabling users to capture or upload a photograph to unearth comparable merchandise within TikTok Shop.
As of September 2024, TikTok has also rolled out "TikTok Search Ads Campaigns," a keyword-centric search solution meticulously crafted to feature brands' advertisements directly within the search results interface, thereby affording advertisers the capability to precisely target this particular digital real estate.
The extent to which TikTok intends to implement its reviews tab on a wider scale remains ambiguous, as the corporation refrained from offering commentary prior to publication; however, empirical evidence from TechCrunch's assessments indicates the feature is selectively displayed, appearing on a limited subset of videos featuring geotagging.
