Some people think TikTok makes it hard to focus. But many people everywhere are watching a live video from a TV channel in Sweden they don't know. It's time for the Great Moose Migration.
Every spring for many years, moose have walked across the Ångerman River to find a warmer place for the summer. Since 2019, people everywhere can watch this online for three weeks. Swedish TV shows a live video with over 30 cameras to see the moose as they slowly move.
Usually, the live video shows calm pictures of trees and rivers. If you watch carefully, you might see a moose walking by. The moose doesn't know it's famous around the world. It's just a moose walking slowly, not thinking about anything.
Usually, the stream is quiet. Sometimes, you can hear the wind and the birds singing. It's pleasant, even if you leave the stream open and are surprised by birds from far away.
A student from Sweden told a news agency: "I feel relaxed, but at the same time I'm thinking, 'Oh, there's a moose. What if a moose is near? I cannot go to the toilet!'
The video stream runs continuously, even through the night. Night vision cameras ensure we can observe the moose in the dark. However, the black and white image gives it a slightly eerie feel, more like a horror movie than a nature documentary. Despite the spooky look, seeing a moose is still exciting.
Last year, 9 million people watched SVT's moose stream. More than 22 million people watched the Discovery Channel's Shark Week in 2023. SVT's nature stream had only 15 workers, so 9 million viewers is very good.
What makes this kind of live stream interesting is that it's very different from what we usually see online. On TikTok, you see short videos that are made for your interests, so you want to keep watching. On YouTube, people carefully edit their videos so we stay interested for a long time.
But the moose don't need anything from us. They don't know we are here, even if we are cheering for them.
