The anticipation, the pursuit, the powdery, sugar-coated slab of gum—for generations of baseball card fans, there was nothing quite like scraping together some change and dashing to the store to buy a wax pack.

Some tore open the slightly tacky paper wrapper and rifled through the cards in an insatiable instant (hence the enduring phrase “ripping wax” for opening card packs even today, some 35 years after the use of actual wax wrappers ceased).

Others opted for the slow reveal: one card at a time, peeking from a corner of the pack, or perhaps upside down and reversed.

Whichever method you chose, it was the right way.

"There is something inherently magical about peeling the paper from a wax pack."

"There's a visceral quality to it—bringing the pack to your face and inhaling its scent," says Brian Pirrip, owner of the collectibles business M1NT.

"It's the blend of all these aromas—the wax, the gum, the cardboard—that transports you back to a different era."

Collecting and trading cards have been integral to the baseball ecosystem since the 1860s, yet the wax pack emerged as the primary distribution method in 1951, introduced by Topps.

Unwrapping a pack was an exhilarating experience; you never knew which player you might draw.

Whether it was a future Hall-of-Famer like Brooks Robinson or a “common” card such as Sixto Lezcano, the sensation remained unchanged: “an innocent joy,” as Pirrip describes it.

You would then trade or flip them, skillfully transforming that pack of 15 cards into 20 through clever negotiations.

Those cards accompanied you wherever you went.

Driven by a blend of history, statistics, and mythmaking, baseball card collecting rode the 1980s nostalgia wave into a major business with extensive overproduction.

Although market saturation drove down prices, the abundance of fan favorites has sparked a renewed interest in opening wax packs.

Of course, you can open modern foil wrappers and chase after high-value autographs, refractors, or other gimmicky cards, but nothing compares to tearing open a wax pack and biting into that thin pink rectangle.

Pirrip has extended his passion for collecting across 47 states, witnessing countless faces light up as a cherished card emerges.

On a recent evening at Citi Field, the home stadium of the New York Mets, Pirrip produced a box of 1987 Topps baseball cards and invited guests to open some packs.

The sight of Nolan Ryan, Don Mattingly, Roger Clemens, and Kirby Puckett elicited gasps of admiration.

Yet the atmosphere remained cheerful, even when encountering names that had not been mentioned in years.

"It instantly transports people to a happier time," he remarks.

"No other experience can replicate that."
