Actor Sam Neill has succumbed to pneumonia, and a private family memorial will be held at his New Zealand farm at a later date, his agent confirmed on Thursday.

The family of Neill, the actor renowned for his roles in "Jurassic Park," "The Piano," and other films, had previously announced his death in Sydney on Monday.

His agent, Philip Grenz, stated that he was furnishing additional details after having spoken with Neill’s relatives and in response to media coverage, which, he noted, “contain inaccuracies and outright falsehoods.”

“Sam succumbed to pneumonia,” Grenz stated.

“Prior to falling ill, Sam had bravely overcome lymphoma through an innovative treatment known as CAR-T therapy.”

He remarked that Neill had completed four projects "back-to-back" over the past year, all of which are slated for release in the coming months.

“Given that Sam was an intensely private individual who detested any form of commotion, his family will pay tribute to him with a private memorial at his farm in New Zealand at a date yet to be determined,” Grenz stated.

The New Zealand actor revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and announced in April of this year that he was cancer-free.

CAR-T therapy, a form of immunotherapy that relies on a patient's own T cells, is used to treat several types of blood cancer.

His agent's statement came after several days of tributes from film industry colleagues, who remembered Neill as a kind, witty, and intellectually curious individual.

“You are so deeply cherished and will be profoundly missed by all of us,” wrote director Taika Waititi on Instagram on Wednesday.

Waititi directed Neill in the 2016 film “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” which remains one of Neill’s most beloved movies in New Zealand.

"Love you and see you soon, sweet Nigel," Waititi wrote, referencing Neill's birth name, which he had told interviewers he changed to Sam at school because there were too many Nigels in his class.

“Sam was exceptionally collaborative,” remarked Steven Spielberg, who directed the original “Jurassic Park” film, in which Neill portrayed paleontologist Alan Grant.

"I thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with him on all the Jurassic films," Spielberg stated.

"Along with Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, our Jurassic family will endure, and Sam will never be forgotten by us or by his countless millions of admirers worldwide."

Neill was among numerous actors and directors who achieved international fame following a surge in Australian cinema that began in the late 1970s.

In New Zealand, he has been remembered as a friendly, modest person who avoided the limelight and supported charitable causes and community projects near his home, according to local media reports.

In addition to his career in film, Neill was also a vintner; under his Two Paddocks label, he cultivated pinot noir and riesling grapes at his winery in the Central Otago region of New Zealand’s South Island.

He is survived by his four children and eight grandchildren.
