Billionaire Warren Buffett stated on Wednesday that his decision to exclude the Gates Foundation from his philanthropic endeavours stems less from any association Bill Gates may have had with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and more from his conviction that his three children are now sufficiently prepared to manage the distribution of his entire fortune.
Buffett remarked to CNBC that Gates’ association with Epstein was “distasteful,” yet the nonagenarian investor intimated that Gates’ transgressions were scarcely more egregious than the missteps he himself had committed over the years in engaging unsuitable personnel or selecting companions.
In the domain of personnel selection, no one achieves infallibility, Buffett remarked on CNBC.
Buffett asserted that he had “read a great deal since Jan. 1 in terms of what happened with Bill and Epstein. And I have read his remarks to Congress given under oath, and I read the cross-examination.”
He remarked that Gates ultimately severed his ties with Epstein.
Buffett remarked that Gates evinced no astonishment at the decision, announced by Buffett on Tuesday, to ultimately bequeath the entirety of his remaining $140 billion in Berkshire Hathaway equity to foundations affiliated with his family and his three children, Howard, Susie, and Peter.
Gates had journeyed to Omaha several weeks prior and spent a protracted period in dialogue with Buffett.
The two had engaged in minimal communication since before supplementary details concerning Gates’s association with Epstein began to emerge, coinciding with the federal government’s release of files from the Epstein investigation.
Gates has asserted that his sole motivation for meeting with Epstein was the prospect of securing philanthropic funding, and that he remained entirely oblivious to the full extent of Epstein's ongoing criminal activities.
Epstein, who had been accused of the serial sexual abuse of numerous underage girls, was discovered deceased at the Manhattan federal detention facility in August 2019; his death was subsequently classified as a suicide by the New York City medical examiner.
Gates characterized Buffett as “one of the greatest philanthropists of all time, and a dear friend” with whom he anticipates spending considerably more time in the future.
His sagacity, magnanimity, and profound sense of vocation have indelibly shaped both his existence and his philanthropic endeavours.
His contributions to the Gates Foundation, approximating $50 billion over the preceding two decades, have been without historical parallel, and have been instrumental in preserving millions of lives, Gates stated in a declaration.
Buffett stated in 2024 that, upon his demise, he intended to terminate philanthropic contributions to the Gates Foundation, delegating to his three children the authority to determine the allocation of his remaining wealth.
The Gates Foundation will continue to command prodigious financial resources: its endowment was valued at nearly $90 billion at the close of last year, and Gates has pledged to bequeath virtually the entirety of his remaining fortune to the foundation.
In ancillary developments from the CNBC interview, Buffett disclosed that he had recently sustained a fractured leg, necessitating surgical intervention, though he affirmed that his convalescence is progressing satisfactorily.
Buffett stated that he intends for his own Berkshire shares to be distributed even more expeditiously than he had previously indicated, specifically by the close of 2034.
To achieve this, he will be compelled to augment his annual donations substantially, surpassing $17 billion per annum.
At present, he is apportioning approximately $6 billion to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation and the foundations administered by his progeny: the Sherwood Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and the Novo Foundation.
Buffett lodged documentation with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday afternoon, which disclosed that he had conveyed a total of 12 million Class B Berkshire shares to those foundations the previous day.
The preponderance of that sum is allocated to the foundation established in memory of his late wife, an entity that may soon rank among the world's largest philanthropic organizations of its kind.
Additionally, Buffett customarily bestows further contributions to his family foundations around the Thanksgiving period each year.
He has stated that, upon his demise, a new foundation will be established to distribute the remainder of his shares, and that his children will be required to reach a unanimous consensus regarding the recipients of those donations.
He desires that his offspring be capable of rendering these determinations prior to their own deaths or the onset of senility, noting that his eldest daughter will be nearly 81 years of age in eight years' time.
The accelerated trajectory of Buffett’s philanthropic divestiture, compressing the disbursement of his fortune into an eight-year window rather than the decade following his demise, will preclude his designated successor at Berkshire Hathaway, Greg Abel, from relying upon the familial bloc as the corporation’s preeminent shareholder for the duration he had anticipated.
Buffett currently commands nearly 30% of the voting power through his 188,290 Class A shares.
Nevertheless, Buffett asserted his conviction that Abel is unequivocally the appropriate individual to helm the conglomerate he established, and “that becomes more evident by the day.”
Nonetheless, Buffett acknowledged that Berkshire’s substantial investment in Google’s parent company—which has appreciated considerably over the past year—was one he personally initiated, rather than an investment selected by Abel, although Abel did consent to it.
As recently as last month, Berkshire agreed to inject an additional $10 billion into Alphabet, having previously tripled its stake in the firm.
