The United States will impose 25% tariffs on some Brazilian imports starting July 22.
The move follows a yearlong investigation by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
It found unfair trade practices by Brazil, including weak anti-corruption enforcement and its own unfair tariffs.
Certain goods are exempt from the tariffs.
These include coffee, beef, oranges, orange juice, some energy products, and aerospace parts.
Officials said these items are not produced in the U.S.
Their exclusion would also prevent supply chain disruptions.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the action ensures a level playing field for American workers and companies.
He added that negotiations with Brazil over the past year did not resolve the issues.
The U.S. has had a goods trade surplus with Brazil for years.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva reacted with indignation.
He blamed his political rival, Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Lula did not negotiate in good faith.
The tariffs are imposed under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
