The United States will add 25% tariffs on some Brazilian imports starting July 22.
This action follows a one-year investigation by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
The investigation found unfair trade practices by Brazil.
These include weak anti-corruption enforcement and its own unfair tariffs.
Some goods are free from the tariffs.
These include coffee, beef, oranges, orange juice, some energy products, and aerospace parts.
Officials said these items are not made in the U.S.
Their exclusion would also prevent supply chain problems.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the action creates a fair situation for American workers and companies.
He added that talks with Brazil over the past year did not fix the issues.
The U.S. has had a goods trade surplus with Brazil for years.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva reacted with anger.
He blamed his political rival, Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Lula did not negotiate honestly.
The tariffs are applied under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
